GWINNETT COUNTY, GA- A call for service at a Stone Mountain area hotel on Sunday morning turned violent as gunfire erupted. An exchange of gunfire left two police officers shot and the suspect wounded. One of the wounded officers succumb to his injuries and passed Sunday morning and the second remains hospitalized fighting for his life. The suspect is now facing a long list of charges related to the incident.
Initial reports indicate around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, officers with the Gwinnett County Police Department were dispatched to the Holiday Inn Express located at 1790 E. Park Place Blvd. Stone Mountain, GA in reference to a fraud related call. Initial reports indicate a out of state victim alerted police earlier in the day that their credit card was being used fraudulently at the hotel.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers arrived on the scene and met with the front desk manager, who advised them of the person renting the room in question. The two responding officers went to the room and met with the subject of interest in the case. Officers learned the suspect had an active warrant for failure to appear out of nearby DeKalb County. While attempting to place the suspect under arrest for the warrant he produced a handgun and fired shots at two responding officers and struck both officers. The officers were able to return fire and injure the suspect. All three shooting victims were transported to area hospitals for their injuries.
According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, the injured officer was identified as Master Police Officer David M. Reed. MPO Reed has been with the Gwinnett County Police Department since September 2015 and was a graduate of the 94th Police Academy. MPO Reed has undergone surgery and remains hospitalized recovering from his injuries. At last report he was listed in critical, but stable condition.
The second police officer that was shot has been identified as Police Officer Senior Pradeep Tamang. Officer Tamang joined the Gwinnett Police Department in July 2024 and was a graduate of the 121st Police Academy in May 2025. Officer Tamang succumb to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on Sunday morning. He was 25-years-old.
The suspected shooter in the case has been identified as Kevin Andrews, 35, of Decatur, Georgia. Andrews has been transported to a local hospital for treatment of what is being called non-life threatening injuries. Upon release from the hospital he will be transported to the Gwinnett County Jail where he faces numerous charges.
Kevin Andrews has been charged with one count of Malice Murder, one count of Felony Murder, two counts of Aggravated Assault Upon a Public Safety Officer, and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
The case remains under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
