TELFAIR COUNTY, GA– Deputies in rural southeast Georgia are safe and a suspect is deceased following a standoff in Telfair County on Sunday afternoon.
According to Telfair County Sheriff Sim Davidson, in the early afternoon hours of Sunday, May 24, 2026, deputies with the Telfair County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched in reference to a call involving threats being made to a citizen by another citizen.
Deputies spoke with the party that the threats had been made against. After the conversation deputies attempted to make contact with the other party in the investigation that had allegedly made the threats.
Deputies went to a property located in the area of Studstill Road off of Temperance Road in Telfair County. Deputies arrived on the property and we’re immediately met with gunfire according to the Sheriff. The two deputies were able to retreat to a safe area and call for backup.
Responding officers from numerous neighboring agencies descended on the scene. The Georgia State Patrol SWAT team and agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation also responded to the scene. The state agencies took lead in the incident shortly after arrival.
Law enforcement attempted to negotiate with the suspect by phone for a period of time. The efforts were unsuccessful and a decision was made for law enforcement to enter the property of the suspect. As agents made their way in they were able to locate the suspect deceased from what has been reported as a self inflicted gunshot injury.
As of our press time the identity of the suspect has not been released. The deputies that came under fire were not injured. The incident remains under investigation at this time.
