Jimmie Lee Steverson the man suspected of fatally wounding a Georgia police officer was booked on charges just last month in Meriwether County.
ANDERSON COUNTY, SC- A 23-year-old man that had been at the center of a statewide Blue Alert has been located and is deceased in a neighboring state according to law enforcement. The suspect was being sought for his involvement in the overnight fatal shooting of a Warm Springs, Georgia Police Officer. Records now indicate the deceased officer and suspect had an encounter just days before the fatal shooting took place.
Late Tuesday night, Sgt. Chris Fisher, of the Warm Springs Police Department was fatally shot outside of the Meriwether Country Inn in the city of Warm Springs. The 36-year-old officer was fatally wounded in what is being described by law enforcement as a drive-by style shooting. Law enforcement suspects 23-year-old Jimmie Lee Steverson was the triggerman that fired the fatal shots that wounded Sgt. Fisher.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Sgt. Fisher had just concluded a unrelated traffic stop in the area of the Meriweather Country Inn located at 5675 Spring Street in Warm Springs and was in his patrol vehicle. While the vehicle was stopped in the parking lot of the business a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado pulled beside Sgt. Fishers vehicle and stopped. The driver of that vehicle fired multiple shots into Officer Fisher’s patrol unit fatal striking the officer. The vehicle then fled the scene. Officer FIsher was pronounced deceased on the scene. His body was transported to the GBI Medical Examiners Office.
After the deadly shooting a Blue Alert was issued and a statewide manhunt began for Jimmie Lee Steverson and the 2026 pickup truck he was suspected to be operating. About 12 hours after the initial fatal shooting in Warm Springs, deputies with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina attempted to perform a traffic stop on a vehicle matching the description of the one Steverson was driving.
Anderson County deputies attempted the traffic stop on Interstate 85 near Exit 27 around noon on Wednesday. When officers approached the vehicle they were able to locate Steverson deceased inside of the vehicle from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot injury. He was transported to a local hospital, but was pronounced deceased by a county coroner at 12:20 p.m. EST. Law enforcement was able to locate two other occupants in the vehicle with Steverson. Their connection to the incident has not been made public at this time although South Carolina officials confirm they were being detained.
At this time there has been no confirmation of a motive in the fatal shooting of Sgt. Fisher. Although records do indicate that Sgt. Fisher and Jimmie Steverson had an encounter just days prior to the shooting. On August 28, 2026, Sgt. Fisher arrested Steverson in Warm Springs on several felony charges to include; obstruction, possession of marijuana, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Steverson had since bonded out of the Meriwether County Jail.
Sgt. Fisher had recently joined the Warm Springs Police Department. He was hired in May and had an extensive law enforcement background having worked at nearby agencies including the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, and Heard County Sheriff’s Office. He was 36-years-old
