ATLANTA, GA- A 29-year-old man was injured on Monday evening after being shot by an Atlanta police officer. A series of events that began with a 911 call quickly escalated to the shots being fired and the man being injured. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the incident.
According to the Atlanta Police Department on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 6:13 p.m., a 911 call was made to Atlanta Police in reference to a disruptive person trespassing and making threats to patrons at the Family Dollar store located at 2045 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in Atlanta.
An Atlanta police officer responded to the call for assistance. Upon arrival the responding officer noticed a male that matched the description of the male provided by 911 operators. The officer approached the male, who began backing away from the officer and eventually fled on foot.
According to the GBI, the officer gave chase to the male suspect. The male entered a storage shed behind a home located nearby. The officer attempted to detain the male suspect inside of the shed and gave several verbal commands that were ignored by the male suspect.
The GBI reports that preliminary information indicates the suspect advanced on the officer and pushed the officer over. During this physical incident between the officer and the suspect, the officer fired a shot at the suspect and struck him. Despite the gunshot wound the suspect continued to flee on foot and ran to a nearby business.
EMS was called to the business, where medical aid was rendered and the suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The GBI has identified the male that was shot as 29-year-old Otis Ponder of Atlanta.
Police have not identified the officer that was involved in the incident. APD confirms the officer did sustain an injury to her leg during the incident.
Atlanta Police called the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to the scene to investigate the shooting as an independent body. Upon completion of their investigation the findings will be forwarded to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
