POWDER SPRINGS, GA– A 34-year-old man was fatally wounded following an incident with police in Cobb County on Tuesday night. An investigation is now on going by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation into the fatal shooting.
Preliminary information released by the Powder Springs Police Department indicates on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 9 p.m., officers with the Powder Springs Police Department were dispatched to a parking lot in the 3700 block of New Macland Road in reference to a person experiencing a mental health crisis.
Officers with the Powder Springs Police Department arrived on the scene and were able to establish with a 34-year-old male. Officers began to speak with the person and made attempts to de-escalate the situation. While speaking with the male, initial reports indicate the male produced a handgun. The action resulted in the officers discharging their firearms and injuring the male.
Powder Springs Police confirm the officers immediately began to render medical aid to the male and paramedics arrived a short time later. Medical responders transported the individual to an area hospital, but he later succumb to his injuries.
The Powder Springs Police Department called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to act as an outside independent body to investigate the officer involved shooting.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified the shooting victim as 34-year-old Gustavo Guimares, of Acworth, Georgia. According to information released by the GBI, Guimares was hit multiple times by bullets.
In a release the Powder Springs Police Department says, “We recognize that situations involving mental health crisis are incredibly difficult for everyone involved, and our thoughts are with the individual’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will act as an independent body into the officer-involved shooting. Upon completion of their investigation the case findings will be forward to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
