ATLANTA, GA- A 44-year-old man was killed late Saturday night in an officer-involved shooting in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the shooting as an independent body and its findings will be reported to the local district attorney’s office upon completion.
The GBI says their preliminary investigation indicates that on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 11:35 p.m., 44-year-old Linton Blackwell of Atlanta was in the area of Ibry Avenue NW and Caine Hill Place NW. The area is located in the Buckhead area of Atlanta near Roswell Road and W Paces Ferry Road.
An off-duty Atlanta Police officer was working an off-duty job in the area, when he was alerted to an argument involving Blackwell taking place outside near 41 Irby Avenue NW at the Pac5es Inn. Atlanta Police say that security at the establishment had removed Blackwell for being a disruptive patron. APD says Blackwell was attempting to re-enter the business from a rear entrance after being removed.
Reports indicate the officer approached Blackwell, who walked away from the officer and in the direction of a parking lot in the back of a nearby business.
The officer continued to follow Blackwell, who entered a car in the parking lot before putting an item in the small of his back. The officer approached Blackwell and gave him verbal commands in reference to putting the gun down. The officer discharged his weapon and struck Blackwell.
Medical aid was rendered by several officers in the area to Blackwell, but he was pronounced deceased on the scene. The GBI has confirmed that a handgun was recovered on the scene. The shooting took place outside of any businesses in the area and no other injuries have been reported.
The Atlanta Police Department requested the GBI to investigate the officer-involved shooting as an independent body. The GBI will conduct their investigation and upon conclusion their findings will be presented to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
