Arrest Made In Deadly Hit & Run That Claimed The Life Of Local Beloved Bicyclist Last April

SAVANNAH, GA- Police in Savannah have announced the arrest of a man in connection to a deadly hit and run crash in April 2025. The crash claimed the life of a beloved Savannah area bicyclist that was well known and loved throughout the Savannah community.

Savannah police have announced the arrest of 38-year-old Byron Reedy in connection to the April 9, 2025, hit and run crash that claimed the life of Larry Scott Haywood, more commonly known to locals as “Larry the Flagman”.

At around 8:55 p.m. on April 9, 2025, Savannah police and traffic investigators responded to reports of a hit and run collision that had occurred near the intersection of Skidaway Road and E. 49th Street in Savannah. Police were notified the accident involved a bicyclist who had been struck by a motor vehicle.

Officers responded to the scene and located and injured Haywood on the scene. He received medical treatment on the scene and was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumb to his injuries. Haywood was well-known around the Savannah area where he rode his bicycle with a large flag attached and blowing in the beautiful coastal breezes of Savannah. He was well-loved and liked throughout the community.

Investigators with the Savannah Police Department Traffic Investigations Unit took Reedy into custody on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. He has been charged with, homicide by vehicle, hit and run resulting in death, serious injury by motor vehicle, tampering with evidence, operating a vehicle without a tag, no proof of insurance, driving with a suspended license, and failure to yield right of way to a bicyclist.

Larry Haywood had moved to Savannah about five years prior to the fatal hit-and-run. He was a native of Chicago. He was 55-years-old according to his obituary.
