Anthony Gresham, 42, of Lithia Springs, GA has been charged federally in connection to a shooting on a Atlanta MARTA train.
ATLANTA, GA- A 42-year-old Lithia Springs man has been charged federally in connection to the shooting of a 17-year-old boy aboard an Atlanta MARTA train earlier this month. Federal authorities have identified a lengthy criminal history connected to the suspect and are now pursuing more serious charges against the suspect.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia has announced charges have been filed against Anthony Gresham, 42, of Lithia Springs, Georgia. Gresham had previously been announced as the suspect connected to the shooting of 17-year-old boy aboard a MARTA train in Atlanta on Friday, June 5, 2026.
In the incident police say on Friday, June 5, 2026, a MARTA train stopped at the Midtown Transit station in Atlanta. A 17-year-old boy boarded the train and shortly after Gresham is accused of walking onto the train behind where the teen was seated. He is suspected of pulling a firearm from a bag and firing three shots at the seated teen. The teen sustained injuries to his left arm and left leg. The shooter fled the scene before they could be apprehended.
Two days later on Sunday, June 7, Gresham was taken into custody by agents with the FBI and Douglas County officials at a residence in nearby Douglas County. The teen was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to survive the injuries sustained.
“My office and federal law enforcement will continue to lean in and partner with local agencies to hold criminals accountable for violent attacks on MARTA, a critical component of Atlanta’s transportation infrastructure that is subsidized by federal funds,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “Gresham was allegedly undeterred by decades of prosecution for robberies, drug trafficking, and other crimes, which compounds the need for federal intervention in this case.”
Federal officials have cited a lengthy criminal history connected to Gresham including felony convictions which bar him from legally being able to possess firearms or ammunition. Gresham’s previous felony convictions include convictions of armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, burglary, theft, and robbery by force.
“Violence will not be tolerated on Marta,” said Marlo Graham, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta. “The citizens of Metro Atlanta and our visitors deserve a safe and secure transportation system. This is a great example of the collaborative work of law enforcement to protect everyone’s right to safety.”
Federal officials have announced an investigation into a recent spike in violent incidents around Atlanta’s MARTA systems. Gresham becomes the second person in recent days to face federal charges connected to recent violent incidents connected to MARTA. On June 2, 2026, John Elijah Matthews, 25, of Decatur, GA was named in a federal complaint charging him in incidents connected to the fatal stabbing of a grandmother at a MARTA station.
ALL SUSPECTS ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY IN A COURT OF LAW!!!
