DEKALB COUNTY, GA- A DeKalb County Police Officer sustained injuries while investigating a person at an abandoned building on Monday morning. The officers located the person and both parties were injured in the altercation that followed.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, on the morning of Monday, June 8, 2026, at 8:18 a.m., an officer with the DeKalb County Police Department noticed a man that appeared to be sleeping on property at an unoccupied business on North Decatur Road.
The officer approached the sleeping male and requested identification. The male subject failed to comply with the officers requests and did not identify themself. The GBI reports the subject reached for a sharp-edged weapon nearby. The officer noticed the male subject reaching for the weapon and attempted to detain the the man.
An altercation followed as the male attacked the officer and was able to knock them to the ground. The attack continued as the officer was on the ground and the male subject was able to stab the officer in the head and arm. During the attack the officer was able to use his weapon and shot the male subject. The attack was stopped by the action.
EMS arrived on the scene and transported both the officer and the male to a local hospital for treatment. As of the latest update the officer is listed in Stable condition and expect to survive the injuries they sustained. The male is listed in critical condition and remains hospitalized.
Investigators have not identified the officer or the male as of our press time. The investigation in the case has been turned over the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who will act as an independent investigative agency. Upon the completion of their investigation the findings will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
