AUGUSTA, GA- A 19-year-old man has been arrested in charged in connection to a fatal Saturday morning shooting in Augusta. The shooting claimed the life of a 44-year-old man and has now left a 19-year-old behind bars facing charges connected to the man’s death.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 200 block of Boy Scout Road around 6:54 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, August 8, 2026, in reference to a suspicious situation. When responding deputies arrived on the scene they located an adult male victim deceased on the side of the roadway.
Investigators responded to the scene and began an investigation into the death. The victim was later identified by the Richmond County Coroner’s Office as 44-year-old Tyrone Whitaker of Augusta. The coroner’s office confirms Whitaker had been shot at least once. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:52 a.m. His body is being transported or an autopsy.
Investigators were able to identify a suspect in the case as 19-year-old Demarion Drinks. Richmond County law enforcement and SWAT units were able to take Drinks into custody around 2 p.m. on Saturday at his home.
He has been transported to the Richmond County Jail where he is charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The case remains under investigation by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
